Tired of all my regular breakfast foods, I needed to shake things up. There was a serious lack of healthy breakfast food options rolling around in my brain. Yogurt again, I guess? My eye caught this bottle – and it was something new. The flavour sounded delicious: Mango Coconut? How exotic! But what in the world is Kefir? I decided to take a chance. I’m glad I did.
Before I put in the time and effort of research, I wanted to make sure I liked it. I’ll describe the taste, it’s kind of like drinkable yogurt (we’ve all had that YOP commercial stuck in our head at some time) but a little more sour. After all, it’s fermented. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and if you don’t mind eating plain yogurt once in a while, you’ll probably like it too.
Kefir, like yogurt is a cultured milk product that originates in Turkey. Roughly translated, it means “good feeling”. Hmm! Kefir grains are used in this process- bacteria and yeast that promote healthy digestion.
Upon further research, I don’t think that this is something I will be having daily, but it definitely has a key health benefit that will make it a semi-regular purchase for me. Kefir is a source of probiotics, which means it boosts your immune system and helps digestion! For those of you who are lactose intolerant, Kefir is easier to digest than milk. Research shows that individuals who are lactose intolerant show little or no symptoms when drinking Kefir. Worth a try? Please consult your physician before trying this if you are lactose intolerant. It provides 20 percent of your recommended daily calcium intake. It definitely kept me full for a long time, so give it a try! I found a PC brand at ValuMart for about $4.99. Stay tuned for some refreshing smoothies that guest star Kefir!
